Wireless networking is spreading day by day and replacing every wired device one by one. In Pakistan, recently PTCL and Wordcall launched wireless broadband formely known as EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized) USB device powered broadband. To learn more about EV-DO visit this link
Today, we bought PTCL’s USB EvDo device for our newly born office. We have to setup EvDo USB device, TP-Link wireless router and plan to share EvDo USB ‘s internet via TP-Link wireless router, we had spent 3 hours struggling to fight with that, tryout every possible solution and at the end get a final solution, so I am going share it so that you can be get benefit from our experience.
Suppose, you have EvDo USB device, TP-Link or any other Wireless router, a PC or Laptop whose lan cabel should be plugged into Wireless router’s LAN port. You just need to follow these simple step to setup your sharing EvDo sharing with Wireless router.
Step-1: Open web admin panel of your wireless router, usually typing 192.168.1.1 in your browser will open it.
Step-2: Then give your wireless router an IP on the LAN side of 192.168.0.254 or 192.168.0.x (x is something between greater than 1 to 254), you have to think about what IP should be reserved for your router.
Step-3: Then turn off the DHCP server in the router.
Step-4: That’s all with your wireless router, do nothing with your WAN or any settings.
Step-5: Now goto your PC/laptop from where your EvDo is connected.
Step-6: Goto your Controll Panel then Network Connections.
Step-7: Right click on EvDo connection icon and select properties and goto Advance Tab.
Step-8: Check allow other users to connect through this computers connection and also checked the allow others to control the shared connection and click OK.
Step-9: When enabling ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) a windows warning message may alert you that the LAN Adapter will be set to 192.168.0.1 or something like that. It means that your LAN card’s IP address is automatically set to 192.168.0.1 with 255.255.255.0 subnet mask, please make sure you do not modify it otherwise sharing will not work. If 192.168.0.1 is not set on your LAN card’s IP settings then set this IP address by opening connection properties and IPv4 settings give it.
Step-10: Next final step, goto your laptop whome you want to connect to wireless router and use Internet. Then goto my network connections on it. Right clicked my wireless adapter and go to properties.
Then proceded to change its tcp/ip settings. Try to give an IP from range 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.253 with mask 255.255.255.0 and gateway of 192.168.0.1
Be sure to also place in the perferred DNS 192.168.0.1
That’s it, Your PTCL, Wordcall EvDo will now working fine with Wireless router.

Hi Faisal,
I’m Jude from the Philippines and am working here in Lahore. I am a Database programmer (old school though…a master of Clipper in the past, and then switched to Access when Clipper was dumped, and thus far I have made many programs using Access with VBA. I tried switching to the full-blown VB, but time does not allow me.) I had a bit of experience with Networking, but never through wireless, which is a rather new technology for me. In short, I have never set up Wi-Fi and DSL for anybody.
Early this month, PTCL launched its wireless so I bought my EVDO-PTCL USB 3 weeks ago with the intention of sharing it to my colleagues via Wi-Fi. When I read your article of June 10 (Sharing EvDo USB device on Wireless Router TP-Link, D-Link, LinkSys), I was encouraged to proceed buying a D-Link Wireless Router from Hafeez. I just did so today (26th of June) and sat down to work. But from the very first step I was bogged down….you said:
Step-1: Open web admin panel of your wireless router, usually typing 192.168.1.1 in your browser will open it.
Well, I have Windows Vista Ultimate in my laptop.
I am normally using Mozilla Firefox version 3.
Now I connected the Router Lan Port 1 to my laptop’s Lan port.
and followed step one.
Browser simply told me “unable to connect”.
I don’t know what “web admin panel of your wireless router” is!
I tried installing the CD that came along with the Wireless router but it seems it’s instructions are for those with normal DSL modem.
How do I proceed? Or better, how do I start?!!!
I would be very grateful if you can help.
More power to you.
Jude

But this requires one machine to be on 24hours without need or need. Dedicate one machine for sharing internet.

I have succeeded in installing the WiFi with EVDO. Yes we have to dedicate one machine to run 24 hours. In the beginning I thought that since all my colleagues use the laptop, one laptop would broadcast to the rest. But this defeats the purpose of a laptop (that it should be mobile!)… so I got one PC, bought a PC UPS to always have the power also for the Wireless router and it’s functioning very well now.
In free space areas it is working well even at 200 meters distance, but in the building, my laptop in the first floor has very low signal. My EVDO is in the 3rd floor. I see that concrete blocks well wireless signal.

Hi my friend from Pakistan… Thanks a lot!! You’re the best!… I was spending over three weeks since bought my Encore Wifi router without to able configuring it until bumped into your blog. I’m from Venezuela, Latin America, I’m working with five laptops and only two of them could access to internet thru my CDMA usb modems (Franklin CDU-680 USB Modem and Huawei 3G USB Modem). It really works!! Thanks again. Allah bless you all.

Hi,
is there any solution where i can share my evdo internet over wifi? i have two laptops both have wifi. currently only laptop at a time can connect to evdo .. is there any software/way through which i can share that internet over wifi so the other laptop can connect to my 1st laptop wirelessly and use evdo’s internet?

Talha,
The above method will work for you, as we have successfully shared the EvDo over wifi. You just use your 1st laptop, connect it with evdo and from its LAN interface connect laptop to wifi router. and you wifi will start broadcasting Internet.
or you can use WLAM instead, i am not sure.
Let me know if it works or not ?

OK people I have a much better solution which is way simpler then defined in this article….I have managed to do this with few clicks and a reboot only….
1. Restore router to factory default (have to connect Wire in LAN port to be able to do this)
2. Disable lan connection and also restart router before you do so connect the wire in the WAN port.
3. After that go to network connections and click setup a home or small office network and follow the simple on instructions….it will ask for a reboot in the end and PLEASE DO SO!!!
4. After reboot Everything would be magically configured and just turn on your wireless laptop or device like a mobile fone with a wifi and enjoy…
you should add security to your wifi router as well after following these steps as then anyone can connect to this wireless network and hack into your systems n infact use ur internet connection as well hehe…
anyways Happy Browsing…any problems just contact me here in the comments!

I’ve seen a couple of devices on internet which can do it but i’m not sure if this can be done with evDo .

To avoid the hassle of adding fixed IP addresses, you can install a small DHCP server on your Windows machine.

Hello Faisal,
i wanted to ask something about usb internet and routers. Since usb net is fast because no sharing is involved, how effective is it to insert the usb device into the router? does the net slow down? the maximum number of internet users in my house at a time are 3 people and i use worldcall (512). i got wi tribe on a trial basis the service was not only weak, but as soon as two people would go on, even gmail wouldn’t open up. i live in an area where all internet providers are not available like evdo or qubee. what do you suggest i do? do you think i should upgrade to 1 mb on worldcall (which works well here) and get a usb router or a simple router? i was planning on getting linksys. also, like how direct usb net never disconnects when the lights go out, is there a way to prevent that on a router without connecting it to a ups? i hope i haven’t confused you.
I am not so technologically savvy so whatever i ask may sound stupid.
thank you!
